Tournament Summary
Kelowna 's AA Peewee Cubs participated in a tournament this past weekend in beautiful Penticton . The Cubs faced 4 Penticton Major teams, with 3 games Sat, and 1 regular game Sun morning, before the finals at 3:30pm. The Cubs concentrate on having fun and developing players, but they approached the tournament with the goal of winning. Their first game Sat was against the Pirates, culminating in a hard fought 7 – 4 victory for the cubs. Next up was the Reds, which the Cubs handled with a 10 – 0 score. The last game of the day saw the Cubs playing the Braves, with the Cubs coming out on top, 6 – 0. Sun morning, the Cubs fell behind, but came back to beat the Royals by a 12 – 7 score, aided by Josh Wyatt's home run late in the game. This put the Cubs into the finals as the favourite. They played a very stubborn Pirates team that wasn't about to lay down and die. Nolan Handley started for the cubs and went 5 1/3 gritty, dominating innings, striking out 12, leaving with the score 2 – 0 for the Cubs in the top of the 6 th and last inning. Alex Ballingall came on in relief with runners at 1 st and 3 rd , closing out the inning with some strong pitching, but not before the Pirates had rallied to tie the game 2 all. The Cubs responded however, with a lead off bloop single to left by Mitch Poole. Second up was Jordan Allison, who showed the fake bunt and took a couple of pitches to allow Mitch to steal 2 nd and 3 rd . With the count 1 and 1, third base coach Gary Yates made an aggressive call and signalled a bunt down the first base line. Jordan laid down a perfect bunt up the first base line and Gary sent Mitch on the suicide squeeze play. Mitch scampered down the line and slid under the tag, JUST beating it out, to give the Cubs and exciting 3 – 2 victory in the bottom of the 6 th . The rest of the team stormed onto the field to celebrate. It was a wonderful effort by all the boys and a very gratifying tournament victory. The team played as a team, won as a team, and had a great time in the process. The Cubs' coaches would like to thank all the parents for their help and support and getting all the kids to the games.
